Black Box Video

Black Box Video

A powerful embedded computer running custom software to maximise stability and provide a user-friendly interface.

The Black Box Video system has been designed to provide a robust video and data capture platform for use within fisheries for compliance, stock assessment, and research monitoring purposes. The system is built around flexibility to enable it to be set-up and configured to be tailored to meet the specific goals of different monitoring strategies, fisheries and individual vessel requirements.

The Black Box Video system functions in an “always on” capacity, ready to start the capture of the video when fishing activity commences until it is completed.

The Black Box Video system has been designed to function continuously without requiring interaction from the fishermen. The system however also offers numerous features for configuring its functions depending upon individual vessel's needs.

The Black Box Video system aligns with industry standards, such as European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) technical guidelines and International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) minimum standards.

Ruggedised Equipment

Suitable for the marine environment. Integrating with almost any sensor incl. NMEA2000 and Marine scales.

Advanced Cameras

“Camera as a sensor” through motion and object detection along with privacy masks and automatic face blurring.

Passively cooled unit

The passive cooling ensures a silent, durable, and unobtrusive system.

Robust Connectivity

In-built LTE and Wi-Fi modules with the ability to connect via external satellite communication modules.

Form factor and cooling

Measuring just 240(L) x 242(W) x 85(H) mm in size, makes it a very compact system.

The passive cooling system design ensures a silent and durable system, with no need for noisy fans that expose the system to dust & dirt entering the hardware.

Cameras and PoE

IP Cameras using the powerful H.265 video encoding to minimise video storage requirements. 4 megapixel wide angle cameras provide high quality and flexible video capture options.

The Black Box Video control unit contains an in-built Power over Ethernet (PoE) module, that supplies the cameras with both power and data connection.

Exchangeable hard-drives provide the primary and backup storage requirements for the system. The operating system & application are run from an internal drive so the system can continue to provide its primary function without one of the exchangeable drives.

An internal uninterrupted power supply (UPS) ensures the system compensates for any power fluctuations encountered. While being powered through an isolated power adapter ensures the system will cause no issues with other systems on board the vessel.

Communication modules for 4G/LTE & WIFI have been built-into the main system to remove the need for additional units to handle the communication requirements.

The in-built GPS module provides reliable positioning recording and time synchronisation that the system’s data capture is based upon.

Supported Sensors

Black Box system includes wide connectivity options with 2x RS-232/422/485, 8x DI, 4x DO, 4x USB3.0, multiple Gigabit PoE ports, and optional 2x Isolated CAN-Bus/N2K ports. Through the system’s digital connectivity, various sensors can be added based on the monitoring needs of individual fisheries. Here is an example list of several commonly supported sensors:

  • Inductive proximity (winch)
  • Hydraulic pressure
  • Current draw
  • Ultrasonic range
  • On/off relay
  • Knife valves
  • Depth (echo sounder)
  • Weather station
  • Motor effect and fuel rate
  • Crane and platform scales integration
  • Camera based motion detection
  • Camera based object detection (AI)
  • and others...

More sensors can be easily fitted to accommodate vessel or monitoring needs. Additionally, numerous CAN sensors can be linked together and connected to a single port on the control unit. Hence, theoretically, the system can support an infinite number of sensors.

Configure: Each camera connected to the system can have its recording parameters individually defined, to specify video quality, resolution, frame rate, and many other parameters.

Detect: The application can detect additional cameras added to the system and has been tested with up to 12 cameras.

Troubleshoot: The ability to connect remotely to the system to check, configure or troubleshoot it. This is handled through our Live View Feature which is integrated within the Analyzer software.

Black Box Video

Transfer: The secure transfer of recorded video can be set-up to automatically transfer captured video data, or a desired subset of it, to land based servers.

Update: The application automatically checks for system updates, and installs them at the next appropriate opportunity when it detects that the vessel is not out on a fishing trip.

Communicate: A messaging service has been built into the application, which enables users of the Analyzer software to send messages to individual or multiple systems at once.
